How to choose a name for your Navratri mandal — with ideas
About 15 minutes
A good Navratri mandal name is built from three things: the form of the Devi you install, the name of your area or society, and what you do — a Navratrotsav, a garba, or a mitra mandal. For example "Shri Jagdamba Navratrotsav Mandal, Shivajinagar" or "Aai Tuljabhavani Sarvajanik Navratra Utsav Mandal". Below are ideas in each style, and five things to check before you settle on one.
Steps
- 1
Start from the Devi
Put the form you install first: Jagdamba, Tuljabhavani, Ambabai, Renuka, Saptashrungi, Ekvira, Durga. Devotees know from the name alone whose mandal it is.
- 2
Add the place
The peth, lane, chowk, society or village. A city has many "Jagdamba Navratrotsav Mandals"; the area name is what makes yours distinct, and what someone searching for it will type.
- 3
Say what you do
Navratrotsav Mandal, Sarvajanik Navratra Utsav Mandal, Navratra Utsav Samiti, Garba Mandal, Mitra Mandal. Sarvajanik means open to everyone; if it is for the society only, say so.
- 4
Keep it short
The name goes on the patrika, the banner, the T-shirts and WhatsApp. Nobody says more than five or six words of it, so keep the short form people will actually use.
- 5
Check it is not taken nearby
A mandal with the same name in the next area confuses devotees and donors. Ask around and search before you print anything; for registration or permissions, ask the relevant office directly.

Common questions
- Mandal or samiti?
- Either works in a name. "Mandal" is the more usual; "utsav samiti" is often used when several mandals or societies run the festival together.
- Should the name say "Sarvajanik"?
- If the festival is open to everyone, yes — devotees then know anyone may come for darshan. If it is for the society only, leaving it out is the honest choice.
- Our Ganesh mandal also does Navratri. New name?
- Most keep the same name — "Shri Ganesh Mitra Mandal, Navratrotsav 2026". The identity carries over and devotees find the same mandal.
- How do we register the mandal?
- Registration and permissions for a public festival vary by place, so ask the relevant office — the police station, the municipal corporation or the charity commissioner’s office. The mandal’s own web page, though, can be made on utsavmandal.com right away, free.
