About the mandal

Lalbaugcha Raja was founded in 1934 at Lalbaug Market by fishermen and vendors who had made a vow (navas) to Ganesha for a permanent market after the Peru Chawl market closed. Devotees know the idol as the Navsacha Ganpati, the Ganpati who fulfils vows. The idol stands roughly 16 to 20 ft tall and has been made by the same family of sculptors since 1935. The mandal runs a dialysis centre, opened in 2011, and has carried out disaster relief, including rebuilding a flood-hit village in Raigad after 2005.
